the developmental basis of evolutionary change
october 20 - 23, 2005

abstract deadline: september 20th, 2005

We welcome you to learn more about the fourth biennial conference on the Developmental Basis of Evolutionary Change (dbec 2005) to be held at the University of Chicago during 20-23 October 2005. This four-day, graduate student-organized conference has a tradition of assembling, at the intersection of evolution and development, a fellowship of faculty and student conferees diverse in intellectual interest. As such, it has been a fertile occasion for initiating unexpected collaborations and probing new ideas.

Traditionally this meeting has been designed as a special opportunity for more junior members of the scientific community to interact with more established members in an intimate environment, encouraging scientific exchange. This includes dinners and receptions during the course of the conference, as well as concurrent sessions, comprised of shorter, submitted talks, and poster sessions.

The conference will commence on Thursday with two keynote addresses, delivered at historic Rockefeller Chapel, followed by an informal reception at the Smart Museum of Art, during which docents will be available to provide tours of the collections. On Friday, the first plenary session will explore the evolution and development of sensation and sensory networks, while the second session on Friday afternoon will feature seven talks on the history and philosophy of evolutionary and developmental thought. Friday night features a special dbec tradition, during which young scientists have the opportunity to dine with invited speakers in the home of a University of Chicago graduate student. Saturday morning begins with talks focusing on ecology, evolution and development, while after lunch, additional topics will be explored during sessions of concurrent talks. Saturday will conclude with dinner at the Quadrangle Club. The final day of the conference will feature a plenary session on genetic regulation, evolution and development.

We look forward to your participation in this year's conference and encourage you to find more information concerning the conference schedule, abstract submission, registration, travel, and accommodations in these pages. If you have any questions or concerns, please contact the organizers.

Feel free to print our posters and post them in your department and on campus.
